What’s all the hype about productivity anyway?

Some countries are experiencing a natural decrease where deaths outnumber births, which is not the case for Canada further enhancing the population net growth. The population of Canada, like other major countries, is aging which causes a potential for loss of knowledge and a reduction of new employees joining the workforce increasing the unaffordability of housing. Canada is betting on improvements in productivity will offset impacts of a contracting labour force.

Traditional methods of construction have claimed to be inefficient and improvements in delivery speeds have been hampered by a lack of productivity when compared to other major global contributors to world economies (McKinsey, 2020). The construction sector globally only showed a 1% growth annually that is 1.8% below the global GDP growth (McKinsey, 2020).

Yes, the construction industry has improved the building materials it uses and building science has progressed but the process of construction is largely unchanged. Innovation has been limited to the design programs and management aspects which only turns the small dials of the innovation of change machine.

Can you think of any other sector that as impactful to both affordability and GDP growth that still produces any product the same way today as they did 50 years ago?
